Monthly Baby Costs: Month Two

Two Months

Month two! We’re currently in this strange parenting paradox in which time feels like it’s both crawling and zooming by. On the one hand, bringing Wynn home from the hospital feels like it was at least six months ago. That’s how long it’s been, right? But when I look at Wynn, I feel like I blinked and suddenly my newborn has transformed into this big baby!

General Baby Thoughts

After month one, I mentioned wanting to savor every stage this second time around. Well, this second month, we totally failed on that front. At about 5.5 weeks old, Wynn became super colicky, and she’s just now starting to come out of it. We even had to postpone our trip to see family because of it. We were in survival mode up in here, and that’s the truth!

But our little bundle of tears has developed in other ways. She’s growing like a weed, just like her sister. Who knew Johnny and I would make such big babies? Wynn’s also rocking nighttime sleeping, and when she does decide to be happy, she puts on quite a show. Her smiles, coos, and little laughs are almost like a drug. It’s not just her mouth that goes wide into a grin. The apples of her cheeks rise up and her eyes become little half moons of pure happiness. We still just need to catch a good photo of it, and then I’ll share it and make everyone in the world instantly joyful… you can thank me later.

As far as the big sister goes, we’re still adjusting, but it’s definitely getting better. Hearing Sally call Wynn “cutie pie” is the very best, while watching her bite Wynn’s toe is the very worst. But where Sally used to be upset every time I nursed or stayed in my room with Wynn in the mornings (which was every morning), she’s now back to her happy self and doesn’t even notice that stuff anymore. So progress. Hooray!

Financial Baby Thoughts

Thankfully, all is as it should be in the financial realm of two-month-dom. We had a well visit for Wynn’s two-month checkup, which was covered by insurance. Aside from that, I purchased a pack of size 2 diapers (okay, a box of 186) for $36 (saving 20% by using Amazon Mom). I also spent $20 on a box of 864 wipes, which better last a good, long while. And finally, we purchased a white noise machine especially for Wynn (we have one in Sally’s room, too) for $20.

I still haven’t bought Wynn any clothes, poor little dear. But she seems perfectly content to wear and spit up on Sally’s hand-me-downs, so I’m rolling with it to save some money for now. So the grand total for month two is $76. And below is one of my more favorite photos from this second month. I told Sally I was taking a few pictures of Wynn by herself, but those words don’t mean nothing to Sally. And in this case, I’m glad she didn’t listen.

Well done both of you for getting through 2 months! It’s the small victories!! Glad to hear Sally is getting there as regards Wynn, I’m sure its one less thing to worry about! They’re ridiculously cute….!! As for Wynn’s hand-me-downs, I wouldn’t take a tack of notice about that, most of us were reared like that…makes perfect sense. You’d be cross with yourself if you didn’t!!!

Thanks, Suzanne!! It’s crazy how different parenting is now that we have two! I wish almost every day that there were two (or three!) of me so I could meet all of their needs! We’ve all learned a lot of patience these last two months!

Cute girls!! I definitely remember the challenge of getting pictures of my younger child 🙂 But it does make for some cute pics/photobombs to look back at now!

Thanks, Jen! Totally… It’s so funny how nothing can ever just be about Wynn! Sally now requests to do tummy time every day… or when Wynn is grabbing her toes, Sally says, “Look! I can grab my toes, too!” Haha, at least for now, Wynn doesn’t seem to mind sharing any and all attention on her.

Isn’t it funny how serious the second child can be? When my youngest was 4mos I got this cute little piece of art from daycare that had a picture of her in it. When I saw it I cried and said “I didn’t know she could smile…I’ve never seen her do it!”
I think when you have those SUPER outgoing first borns, the second child immediately knows to just sit back and wait their turn. My second was content to be in a baby wrap with me all the time. That was her mommy time bc she knew her big sister was boss!

It is nice to have two girls so clothing gets shared. Until one little sister decides to be a fashionista that wouldn’t be caught dead in jeans!

Haha, yes!! I was looking back at Sally’s two-month photos, and she was smiling a TON! With Wynn, we have to be right in her face to get her grinning. I can’t get her to smile at my camera for anything!! And we are in the same boat with Wynn being in a pack on my chest 24/7, poor girl!

Yep, they definitely remind me of our two kids (born 2 years apart) when they were toddlers. Our daughter, the first born, was the outgoing precocious one. Our son, the easy going laid back one. And both kids, years later, still display these same traits. You guys are lucky in the hand-me-down clothing department. We couldn’t ever get our son interested in wearing any of his sister’s castoffs! 🙂

It has been super nice having Sally’s clothes to pass down to Wynn. And it’s crazy, but I think the personality traits you describe are very similar to Sally and Wynn so far. Sally loves being outrageous and the center of attention, and maybe it’s just because Wynn’s a baby, but she seems much calmer than Sally was. It will be fun to see how they develop!

Congrats! Our first is 5 months. Finally getting out of the constantly crying phase 🙂 Good luck!

How fun!! Five months is such a good age! No more colic, and they’re little personalities really start shining!

Love your posts! I’ve been a longtime lurker since Sally was born. I must admit though, I’ve been anxiously awaiting your AFLAC payout report this month. I too purchased AFLAC as an insurance for any future pregnancies and deliveries and I’m curious if it measures up to the premiums I’ve been paying monthly! My husband keeps saying we need to save more money before we have a baby, and then I see your posts and it seems totally do-able. We live in Brooklyn 🙂

Jen! We will definitely be doing the Aflac post soon, promise! Our hospital wouldn’t send us the right form to send to Aflac, so we took a little while getting the payout, but we’ve now gotten it! I’ll post more details soon, but it was well worth the premiums we’ve been paying… I think around $3600 or so. So good to hear from a fellow New Yorker!
