Emergency Preparedness Checklist

Somehow it’s already the end of October. Halloween is in a WEEK. With the ending of this week, we also wrap up our preparedness month! I think more than anything, this month made me realize we were more prepared than I realized we were. At the same time, many of you gave us tips that I hadn’t even though of before. We’ve added a few other items, so I wanted to share our final list. Here’s what our family of three has stored up in bulk both this month and in previous months to be prepared for an emergency.

Food Items

  • Nuts
  • Peanut Butter
  • Canned Tuna
  • Crackers
  • Kraft Mac and Cheese
  • Canned Veggies
  • Breakfast Bars
  • Bottled Water
  • Nonfat Dry Milk

Non-Food Items

  • Paper Towels
  • Toilet Paper
  • Diapers
  • Cat Food
  • Shampoo
  • Soap
  • First Aid Kit
  • Large Bottles of Ibuprofen and Tylenol

Emergency Supplies

  • Survival Blankets
  • Ponchos
  • Flint Fire Starter
  • Cash ($100)
  • Solar-Powered Radio/Flash Light/Cell Phone Charger
  • Water Purifier (LifeStraw)
  • Manual Can Opener (for canned food)
  • Warm Blankets
  • Extra Batteries

And, in case you’re looking to get prepared, here’s a nifty checklist:

So bring on the winter storms! We’re ready. Just kidding. I’ve really been loving this abnormally warm October, and I’d be fine if we never needed even one of these emergency items. Has anyone else recently gotten prepared for an emergency? Also, happy Friday!

Great post! I remember you made a post about rent and how to calculate it with your income, but I can’t find it! Can you help me?

How about including bottles of hand sanitizer? I stash it everywhere. Great list you have there. Thanks for providing it.

Great idea! I never would have thought of that. Thanks!

Being the prepared person I am (hello girl guide for many years) I bought emergency earthquake kits as soon as we moved to Victoria, BC and then added a few things. The only additional items we have included that are not on the list are hand sanitizer as mentioned in the above comment, extra set of car keys and house keys (I rarely lose my keys but if you were the sort of person who does I could see this being a very good idea if you had to leave the house quickly), face masks (could be useful for a pandemic or if there was smoke or dusk from rubble), duct tape, work gloves, glow sticks, whistle, and a inflatable boat for tsunami….kidding, there is no boat but perhaps this could be an useful addition 😉

Great additions! We have face masks, work gloves, glow sticks, and a whistle in our 72-hour kit.. But duct tape! That’s a good one I never would have thought of. I actually saw a Naked and Afraid where someone brought that, and it was super useful!!

This may be a bit uncouth, but I would add ‘lady products’ and clean undies (for the whole family). I mean, you never know… Haha! Please don’t kick me off of your blog… 😉

Yes. Totally. There would be nothing worse than being without those.
