Our Internet Is Down

Internet Is Down

Not too long ago, we did a post on the perks of renting. Welp, one of the non-perks is having the Internet go down and having no power over getting it fixed. With nothing better to do, Johnny and I have just been staring each other down for the past 24 hours and taking turns saying, “Unacceptable!” We’ve also compared our need of the Internet to water and oxygen, so maybe the temporary hiatus will help us reign that in. Before our Internet went down, here’s what we were up to:

  • Preparing a post about our February budget
  • Planning an upcoming getaway to somewhere warm(er)
  • Researching car seats (Sal is a growing girl)
  • Posting videos of Sally walking
  • Calculating the cost of a new bed (mattress, bed frame, sheets, comforter… Details to come)
  • Wasting lots of time

Now that our Internet is down, here’s what we’re doing:

  • Emailing our landlord from our phones
  • Calling our building manager
  • Repeating the latter and the former 1 billion times

I’m trying to convince Johnny that this is a sign that we need to just take off work and drive to California. What do you think?

P.S. Anyone else forego the kitchen table and eat dinner in front of the boob tube some nights?

Hopefully it gets fixed ASAP! The internet is definitely a ‘need’, especially for awesome bloggers.

And yes, it’s fun every now and then to plop in front of the TV with the dinner. It’s multi-tasking right?

    • Reply Joanna February 7, 2014 at 1:43 am

Yes, multitasking indeed! That makes me feel much better about it! 🙂

I don’t have a kitchen table so I’m either in front of the TV or my computer every night.

Is your internet included in your rent? I rent too but if my internet goes out, I just call my provider to get it working again. Hopefully you’re back online soon!

I think that’s where our tradition started… this is our first place with a real kitchen table.

Our Internet situation is complicated. There was only one provider for the whole building. They got in a fight with the HOA and refused to offer service anymore. And now the whole building is without Internet until it gets wired for a different provider. Annoying!

Yikes, that sounds messed up! Hopefully the situation gets resolved soon!

Oooh, a real kitchen table….a girl can dream! 😉

Oh, no way! I’m super anti dinner-with-TV. I insist that we sit together at the table and talk.

I didn’t realize that internet would EVER come with a rental. That is surprising to me! When I lived in rentals, I still had to buy a modem and pay the internet company myself. Hmm…

    • Reply Joanna February 7, 2014 at 1:46 am

Yeah, it’s kind of weird. It doesn’t come with the rental, but our building is only wired for one company. And that company refuses to offer our building Internet now. It’s all a big mess.

We totally forego the table – almost every night. At first I hated it but I’ve come around to kind of loving the casualness of it. I think it is a generational thing – my parents would never eat dinner while watching TV.

    • Reply Joanna February 7, 2014 at 1:47 am

Ha, I look forward to it, too! And my parents were super adamant about eating dinner around the kitchen table… who knows, maybe I’ll change my mind when our kids our older? For now, I’ll take the coffee table!

Sadly, we’re frequently eating dinner in front of the TV. We don’t have a lot of space in our dining room and the table often has other stuff on it, plus it’s against the wall, so it’s not the most pleasant place to eat with a loved one. Also, the hubby and I are always trying to catch up on a favorite show so we’ll generally double-task when we’re behind. When we have a large enough place in our next move, I will be looking forward to when we can eat comfortably at a dining table again.

Same with us. We’re always catching up on our favorite shows! I like to think of it as a dinner and a movie date night (when Sally doesn’t join us, ha).

Ugh…no internet sounds horrible! Hope it gets fixed soon!

We usually eat at our dining room table, and we love not having a TV anywhere on the main floor of our house, but we occasionally have pizza and movie nights where we all eat in the family room and watch a good movie 🙂
(this is much different from when my hubby and I had our first apartment, and always ate dinner in front of the tv!)

Thanks, Jen! The Internet situation is a mess.

I think as we have more kids and as Sally gets older, we’ll be more gung-ho about the kitchen table. We did special pizza and movie nights growing up, and I loved it!

Boo to no internet… and my favorite part of this whole post is the little top pony tail!

    • Reply Joanna February 7, 2014 at 1:52 am

Haha, that is Sally’s daily hairstyle these days. I’m teaching her young to sit still and let her mom fix her hair!

  • Reply Anna//Gone Banannas February 5, 2014 at 12:59 pm

Oh lordie, we probably eat in front of the boob tube TOO often, but a girl has GOT to fit in her Ellen time! And I am so sorry about your internet, that stinks. But, in other news, THAT PONYTAIL.

    • Reply Joanna February 7, 2014 at 1:55 am

Oh, good. I’m glad there are other folks like us. It’s our only time to catch up on our shows! Her ponytail has a life of its own, but its a nice distraction from her baby mullet :).

Hi! Sorry about your internet. :/ I just wanted to let you know that I saw that Target was offering 20% off of car seats via their Cartwheel app. Seems like a great deal!

    • Reply Joanna February 7, 2014 at 1:58 am

Awesome! Thanks for the tip! I’ve been meaning to download that app… not that I need any more excuses to head to Target! 🙂

I agree that it’s unheard of around here for rentals to include internet, except maybe in some rare cases. So hooray for saving money but boo for giving up control!

Pre-kids, hubs and I would almost always watch dinner in front of the tv. And for the first year or so of Baby Girl’s life, when we would eat separately from her, we continued. But now that she’s a functioning member of dinner-eating society, we all sit at the table (often time pushing the papers aside) and eat as a family. I wouldn’t want it any other way, since we catch up on our day apart (hers usually consist of “playing toys and having fun”. Oh, to be 3 again.)

It’s a really weird situation… all of the tenants in our building are required to have Internet from the same provider. And that provider is refusing to give us service, so we’re without Internet until a new system gets installed. One. big. mess.

I think we’ll probably follow your trend with eating dinner at the table once Sally’s a bit older. Very important! I definitely don’t want her growing up thinking TV with dinner is a must!

Hey Guys! Been reading your blog for a while, thanks for the great tips. Bummer your internet is down, hope those smart phones are tiding over your internet cravings.

    • Reply Joanna February 7, 2014 at 2:01 am

      Thanks! We’re making do somehow!

Hopefully you’ll get internet soon. I can relate, if the internet goes down it is like the water being turned off (well, maybe not that extreme, but close!) As for driving to California, definitely do it! It’s warmer here, anyway. 🙂

    • Reply Joanna February 7, 2014 at 2:02 am

Ha, don’t tempt us! It’s snowing right now. I find it hard to believe that it was ever warm outside… it’s such a vague memory!

  • Reply Brian February 6, 2014 at 1:04 pm

We had a snow storm a few weeks back that knocked out cable and internet. It was pretty much terrible. At least you have smart phones to keep the shakes at bay

    • Reply Joanna February 7, 2014 at 2:05 am

Ugh, that sounds like the pits. We still have cable, which helps. And Johnny made his iPad into a hotspot, so we have Internet again, just not Netflix on our TV and stuff. Kind of sad how dependent we are on it!

I stumbled across this blog today via http://www..theleangreenbean.com and I am SO thankful I did!! I’ve always had a hard time managing my finances. Im engaged now, but we don’t want to get married in horrible debt and we need to budget our money so we CAN get married. Your site has given me some more insight to doing so! Keep posting!

Every once in awhile we’ll eat in front of the TV, but not that often. I hate when my internet goes down. It’s infuriating. It’s interesting that one of the most necessary of utilities, like internet, goes down often but cable never does.
