Our Freaking Budget Turns 3!

OFB Turns Three!

It’s hard to believe we’ve been going at this thing for three years now! When we first started this blog, I was very large and in charge, just one month out from giving birth to Sally. And Johnny and I had no idea how parenthood would change our lives (financial and otherwise), so we thought it would be an ideal time to start blogging. (yeeeeah…)

We had some major new-parenthood growing pains with sleep deprivation and feeling inadequate and questioning what we were doing with this one life we’d been given. And then Sally snapped out of her colicky stage, and we had this one perfect weekend of strawberry picking and bowling as a family and feeling like we’d unlocked the secrets to life. The following Monday, Johnny lost his job. That really rocked our world, but thanks to budgeting, we were a-okay. That experience also helped solidify our desire to someday be in charge of our own destiny.

Soon after, we moved to Utah, and Johnny worked for a company there, but flew often between Utah and NYC, and eventually we moved back to NYC. While in NYC, we welcomed Winnie into the world, and our hearts doubled in size as soon as we met her.

And finally this past summer, we moved back to Utah to pursue self-employment. So here we are now, five months into trying to make our dreams a reality. And the two constants through all of our life changes these past three years have been our budget and OFB. I don’t know where we’d be without them.

We’ve learned so much in the past three years… here are just a few examples:

Thanks for being such an awesome community these past three years! We love hearing from you and being motivated by you. So many times Johnny and I have read your comments and thought, “Man, they should be the ones with a personal finance blog!” Here’s to another year of being inspired by you guys! xx.

Congrats, it’s always a great experience to look back and realize how much has changed. We always get caught up so much in the day to day that it’s easy to forget all the changes and accomplishments and things that we’ve learned. I think a blog is a great way to be able to do this. Congrats and here’s to at least three more years ahead!

    Hi guys!
Just wanted to also add my Happy Birthday wishes to your blog which is older than both of your kids and probably could be considered as a living “member of the family”! Hope to read more of your family’s adventures in the years to come.

I love this blog. I check it every day. Thank you for writing it. I think our world of consumerism and debt and bankruptcy needs more of this stuff.
