Thank you for all the well wishes with baby Wynn’s arrival! We’re trying to soak up every second of these newborn days since we now know from experience just how quickly they’re gone.

When we moved to New York City and found our current two-bedroom apartment, we knew Sally and her new little sister would be sharing a room. And that meant transitioning Sally out of a crib and into a bed. But what kind of bed? Toddler or twin? She’s only two, so we wondered whether a twin bed was even an option at her age. On the flip side, we didn’t want to get her a toddler bed and then have to turn around and get her a bigger bed just a few years later. We heard pros and cons of each from other parents (including some of you!), but ultimately we decided a twin bed would be the best option for us. Here were a few of the deciding factors:

  • We found a twin bed frame that was low to the ground like a toddler bed.
  • The twin bed could double as a guest bed for visitors.
  • We could buy one bed that would last Sally for the foreseeable future.
  • We had enough space for a twin bed.
  • We wouldn’t have to worry about storing a toddler bed when Sally grew out of it.
  • A twin bed would provide an extra sitting area for reading books or being together as a family in Sally’s room.

If we could minimize the number of purchases we’d have to make in the future and still give Sally a bed that fit her needs, we were all in. And a twin bed seemed to do just that. We were able to work with our friends at Tuft & Needle on this project, which was perfect since we love just about everything about their company: American-made mattresses that are both high quality and reasonably priced. Plus, they’re the highest-rated mattress on Amazon and they offer a 100-night trial (!) and 10-year warranty. Since Johnny and I also sleep on a Tuft & Needle mattress, we can say from a year’s worth of sleeping experience that they also make for an extremely comfy night’s sleep.

We’re still letting Sally sleep in her crib until it’s time for Wynn to move out of our room. And we plan to add a little guard rail for Sally until she gets used to being in a big bed. We’re already prepping her and calling it “Sally’s big-girl bed.”

Now here’s the good part! In honor of Wynn making her debut, Tuft & Needle is giving away a twin mattress to one of you! If you’re looking to transition your toddler out of the crib and into a twin bed, here’s the perfect excuse to get it done.

The giveaway is for contiguous US residents only, and it closes Sunday at midnight ET. Good luck!

*Heads Up/Disclosure: Tuft & Needle was kind enough to provide the mattress, but we weren’t compensated to do this post. All opinions came straight from our own noggins, not some robot’s.

I have never heard of this company, so I’m sure if a person would ask if I have been living under a rock. With that being said I think the bed is so cute and perfect for a toddler. Later on it will be easy to transition in something a little more grown up. Congrats with the new bundle of joy!

Loved the sneak peak into Sally’s big girl room! Can’t wait to hear more about the transition from crib to bed! We just added a little guy to our family in November–and have been learning that sleep is not as easy as we thought!

A thought – instead of a guard rail, use a pool noodle under the fitted sheet. That’s what we did when we moved our little one from crib to bed and it is great. He can’t roll out of bed, and he can’t bump his noggin on the guard rail when he’s goofing off in there. Plus they are a whole lot cheaper on the budget!

I love this idea!! Thanks for sharing! So smart.

Good luck with the transition! We have an expandable toddler bed from Ikea that stretches to a full-size twin, and we are currently using it in the middle setting (our daughter is 3.5). We couldn’t decide between a twin or toddler bed either, so this seemed like the perfect solution.

We never even considered a toddler bed. When we purchased our house (it was my grandmothers), there were two twin beds in what became our little guy’s room. So when we put the crib in, we just left one of the twin beds, so he was used to always seeing one there. Before our little lady was born we told him that he would be moving to a big boy bed. He was really excited. We let him pick out two sets of sheets (Spiderman and The Avengers) and that night he went to bed in his big boy bed and we haven’t looked back since (he was just barely two at the time).

Maybe I am weird, but why is there no box spring?

Oh good! It’s great to hear someone who’s had a good experience with the transition. The mattress can have box springs or it can be on its own. I think a lot of foam mattresses have that option, so we’ve just kept it simple for the twin bed and our own.

Congrats on your new little girl! She is adorable and I just love her name. Nate and I were just talking about this last night. We aren’t sure what to do because Rory will only be 18 months when this one is born so we aren’t ready to move her out of her crib yet, but we really don’t want to buy two cribs. Luckily we will probably be able to keep the new baby in a pack’n’play for a few months and then maybe Rory will be ready for a big girl bed. I’m all about just doing s twin bed. The less “stuff” with kids, the better!! I hope life with two little ones is treating you well!

Thanks, M.C.! I bet you’ll be able to put Rory in a big girl bed once your new baby is a few months old. I know several people who have made the transition before their kids are two and it’s worked seamlessly for them. So excited for you guys to add another to your brood! It’s been a big change, but we already can’t imagine our family any other way!

Where did you find the bed frame? So cute!

Thanks, Lisa! We ordered it online from Walmart, of all places. It was super easy to put together, and it’s great quality!
