Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone! Johnny and I didn’t really celebrate Valentine’s Day last year. Sally was just barely a month old, and we were neck deep in the realities of new parenthood. In other words, we were zombies. When Johnny got home from work that night, we didn’t even have the energy to pretend to celebrate. I made roast, Johnny brought me flowers, but we were both on the verge of sleep-deprived nervous breakdowns. We were living with literally no sleep, and I wondered how on earth we could keep up this parenting thing. But here we are a year later! The sleep deprivation thing improved dramatically just a couple of weeks later. And this year, we’re fighting over kisses from our little toddling Valentine. Right now she insists on only open-mouthed kisses, which is probably okay for a little while longer. But at some point before her teens, it’s gotta stop. Sally has a special Valentine surprise to give her dad this year (Hint: It involves chocolate… Johnny’s the chocolate lover in our family.).
For Valentine’s Day, we’ve decided to treat ourselves to a little weekend getaway as a family. We’re headed to Southern Utah for some hiking and 70-degree weather. And when we get back, we’re going to have our cheap Valentine’s Day dinner for two (per tradition!). If Sally has anything to do with it, that roast will be gone in no time. We’ve got a little carnivore on our hands. But for now, we hike!
How are you spending your Valentine’s?
p.s. Here’s our $15 love story!

Hope you guys have a wonderful Valentine’s Day and enjoy your weekend with lots of sun and warm weather. The bf and I made a nice breakfast together and will probably go out to lunch today. We are not the gift giving kind, but will give the gift of spending time with one another since we have been so busy these past few weeks.
Thanks, Amanda! Johnny and I are the same way. Time spent together is quite the gift these days!
Happy Valentine’s guys – and to you too, Miss Sally !!! 🙂
Hope you all have a great chocoholic time and a yummy dinner together. This morning I handed out Valentine’s cards to my wife and to her mom (who lives with us and will be turning 94 this weekend)! Have a great weekend.
It sounds like you doted on your two Valentines just perfectly, Rob! I’m sure they feel lucky to have you!
Happy Valentines you two (or three) 😀
Great idea on the valentines supper! A quiet romantic dinner without dealing with other people and their kids, slow waiters and waiting forever for overpriced food!
We celebrated in a similar fashion – I made lamb shank in the slow cooker, with a red wine sauce.
Total preparation time required – 15 minutes plus sauce baby-sitting time.
Total cost – $17 including the bottle of wine.
Outcome – I outdid myself this time, yum yum…
Mmm, sounds delicious, Linda! Johnny and I will take a good meal at home over a night almost every time!
This year the young adult group at our church offered all of the couples with young children free babysitting. Which was AWESOME. So we dropped our boy off at church at 6:30 and got to go out for three whole hours by ourselves. We just went to Mexican restaurant (we didn’t want to deal with crowds, so we chose one we didn’t think most people would pick on Valentines) and then to the bookstore afterwards. It was so nice to have a date on actual Valentine’s day- we haven’t done that in years.
Nice!! There’s not a more perfect Valentine’s gift than free babysitting. It sounds like you guys had a lovely evening together. You need to make sure your church makes that a yearly Valentine tradition! 🙂
