In case you missed our Instagram announcement, the OFB household will be growing again come April! We couldn’t be more excited, although we don’t think Sally has a clue that a baby in mommy’s belly means losing her only-child status.
Today I’m 18 weeks, so we’re almost halfway there! I was pretty darn sick for a while, so if things felt a little slow going on OFB, now you know why! It got to the point where I couldn’t remember how it felt to not be nauseous! Poor Johnny was running this way and that to find the ONE food each day that sounded edible. He’s a good man. But finally there was light at the end of the tunnel, and now I’m back to my old self! Hallelujah! I’ll be posting more pregnancy updates on Instagram @joannaofb, if you’d like to follow along!
Having baby #2 will present a whole new slew of financial discussions, so stay tuned!

Congratulations! What wonderful news! And, your bump is so darn cute :)!
Thank you! We’re very excited!
Yeah!!!!!
Congratulations!
I have to warn you having them close (mine are only 17mos apart) will end up being wonderful. They will adore each other and Sally will be super protective. However, I found having 2 took way more adjustment than the first!
I had a much harder time with that transition and if I could go back the ONE thing I would have changed is I would have left my toddler in daycare. It wasn’t financially possible at the time but I never got the two of them to eat or sleep at the same time! One would fall asleep and the other would wake up. I never got rest…did not help that the toddler was also sleeping in our bed (i.e. kicking me in the face all night long).
The great is to this day my almost 7 yo is soooo loving and caring of her little sister. She hugs and kisses her every night, holds her hand and walks her to class every morning and will let a grown up know if her sister is being picked on (which is good bc the little one won’t speak up).
Thanks! I can’t imagine the transition we’re about to face! We’re just going to try to take it one day at a time. They’ll be 27 months apart, and I have no idea what Sally’s initial reaction will be. I’m guessing she’ll revolt in the beginning. But, yes, we’re very excited for Sally to have a little friend who she will always be close to!
Congratulations! So happy for your family.
Thanks, Carrie!
Wow congratulations! Great news and exciting times. Those first 12 weeks or so are rough, aren’t they – especially when you can’t tell anyone WHY!
Thanks! And oh man… I am so glad those days are over! It really felt like they’d never end!
Congratulations! Yeah being nauseated is awful! My daughter was 15 months when I got pregnant and she didn’t understand at all for about 6 months! She really didn’t understand she was no longer going to be the only until after her sister came. It was a BIG adjustment. But 6 months later they are actually starting to play together and the oldest is always hugging on her. It’s quite cute. I can’t wait until they can play more! Although that comes with the fights too 🙁 Sally will love it! Such fun times! My sister and I are 6 years apart and I would have loved if we could have been closer in age! The good thing about 2 is financially it’s not a big adjustment! Lots of reusing of big ticket items…except the double stroller that makes a dent!
I’m sure initially it will be a big adjustment for Sally! She has no clue what’s coming! I’m really excited for her to have a little friend, though, eventually. And you’re right… the second time around, the financial burden is so much less! I haven’t bought even one thing yet!
Congratulations! I am already excited for Halloween sibling costumes!
Thanks, Tarynkay!
Awww congratulations!!!! That’s so exciting!!! How far apart will your kids be?!?
Hope you have a wonderful weekend!!
Thanks, Sarah! They’ll be 27 months apart exactly…. I never had a sibling that close in age, so we’ll see how this goes!
Congratulations! That picture is adorable – your bump is the cutest! So happy for you guys! And I’m glad your “morning” sickness is getting better – that is the WORST! Hopefully you feel back to 100% soon!
Thanks, Meredith! This second time, the morning sickness just wouldn’t go away!! So glad that part’s over! Thankfully, the second trimester has been a breeze!
Congratulations!
Congratulations! I’m so excited for you all! Having a sibling for Sally is going to be great. I got my double stroller on Craigslist and it was invaluable.
Congrats!
Shay
Thanks, Shay! And good idea! I’ll definitely be scouring Craigslist when the time comes to start looking for a new bed for Sally and the dreaded double stroller!
Congratulations! We’re due to have number 2 in May, so I’ll look forward to your posts on how to prepare!
Congrats, Jennifer! How exciting! I’ve let myself off the hook this first half of my pregnancy, but now that I’m at 20 weeks, it’s time to start prepping. Let the nesting begin!
Congrats! That is wonderful news! I wouldn’t worry too much about extra costs. When we had our 2nd (girl) she was exactly 2 years younger than her big brother… so I’m guessing a similar gap as Sally and your upcoming addition. We were able to transition our son out of his crib, and really he was just outgrowing most of the baby gear. We got him a bigger car seat, and our daughter has really only cost us the extra diapers, as we were able to reuse most of the boys clothes and get some used baby girl clothes from a friend. I think only the 1st baby really costs a ton of money 🙂
I sure hope so! I’m really hoping to have Sally potty-trained by the time the second baby comes (knock on wood), so we only have to buy diapers for one child. We’ll see if she’s ready when the time comes!
Congratulations!
Congratulations! Very happy for you and can’t wait to read more about your journey as a family of four 🙂
Thanks, Amy!
Congratulations, Joanna!… And Johnny and Sally! What a wonderful blessing! If you are 18 weeks today, your due date wouldn’t be April 10th would it? Because MY wife is 18 weeks today too. Now that would be crazy!
Haha, no way! That is NUTS. Yes, my due date is April 10! And congrats to you two on your baby on the way. Is this your first? How very, very exciting!
Congratulations! I look forward to seeing how your budget will change with your growing family. 🙂
Yep! There are definitely changes a’comin!
congrats! we had our second little one of the summer and out little guy thinks his little sister is the best and she smiles for him in ways she doesn’t smile for anyone else. it is truly magical
Yay! So happy to hear that! So far, Sally has ZERO interest in little babies (other than the doll kind), so I’m really hoping she has a good relationship with this one!
YAAAAAAAYYYYYY!!! Congratulations! I can’t wait to hear about how Sally reacts to the new little one. Glad to hear that you’re feeling better. And Kudos to Johnny for procuring non-nauseating food for you…
Thanks, Miranda!! I’m interested to see how Sally reacts, too. I’m sure there will be some growing pains! Johnny is a real champ during my pregnancies… and let’s be honest, I milk it for all it’s worth! 😉
Congratulations!! We have two, and they are great friends to each other! Can’t wait to see your new little one!
Thanks, Jen! We’re really excited to meet this new addition in April!
Congratulations! How exciting!!!
Thanks, Liz!
Congratulations! What wonderful new!
Thanks, Lizzy!
Congtratulations! I look forward to the baby finance posts!
Congratulations! That is brilliant news x
Thanks, Rachel!
Congratulations! Hope Sally loves being a big sister!
Thanks! And oh, goodness! I hope so too!!
Congratulations Joanna – oh yeah and to Johnny too for all his .. ahem .. “hard work! 🙂
Sounds like you guys are following in our footsteps back when my wife and I were around your ages, especially if baby #2 turns out to be a boy. Our daughter was born first, followed 2 years later by our son. She was always very protective of him back then (as I recall) and they played together for hours at a time with not “too much” sibling rivalry. I always remember how (being newbie parents) we closely parented our young daughter but later (being old hands at this parenting thing) we were much more laid back with our son. We used to take tons of pics of our young daughter (just like you guys do, I assume) but later we took nowhere near the number or pics of our son. And, whether this difference in parenting style was one influence, our daughter grew up to be a very determined (Type A) young lady, while our son grew up to be more of a laid back (Type B) young dude. Both grew up to be quite intelligent and hard working and for that we feel blessed in how successful they both turned out in their respective careers.
Of course, should your baby #2 turn out to be another girl, then I presume that Sally hand-me-downs will be the order of the day to some extent. Right?
Again, congratulations and glad to see that you are feeling more your old self these days.
I’m sure we’ll be much more laid back with our second. I already feel kind of sorry for him/her because I’ve been so much less focused on this pregnancy than I was with Sally’s. We’ll see what kind of balancing act we can muster once we’ve got two of them! Ready or not, it’s happening!!
Girl. Friend. That little baby bump is so cute! And so is the baby standing next to it 😛
Thanks, Anna!!
Congrats! My two boys are two years apart, my youngest is Sally’s age. (Both my kids were born in January) Having two was pretty hard for the first few weeks, but since then has been the best! Not that there aren’t hard times, but it’s twice the fun, twice the snuggles and smiles and cute mischief and excitement. Plus, now they are starting to play together really well which is darling and exciting! I’m so excited for you and Johnny and Sally!
Thanks, Courtney! And that’s great to hear! I’m gearing up for a hard first few weeks (or months!), but I think it will be worth it in the end! Sally NEEDS a sibling… she is all to aware that she’s the center of our universe!
Congratulations! I’m expecting my 2nd in March, so it’ll be fun to watch your pregnancy move along with mine over the next few weeks! I was in the same nauseous boat for the first few months, but feeling great now, and I’m glad you are, too! Much easier with a kid in the house when you don’t feel like curling up in a ball every day.
Congrats to you, too, Alexis! How exciting! And no kidding… I was a really bad mom when I was nauseous, but I couldn’t help it! Poor Sally spent a lot of time on the couch with me those first couple of months. Thank goodness that phase is over!
I am so excited for you!! Congratulations on the new baby…and Sally has no clue.
Thanks, Michelle! Haha, you’re so right…. Sally’s in for the surprise of her life!
Wow! Congrats to you! Baby #2 is coming! So excited!
Thanks, Jayson!
