Leavin’ on a Jet Plane

Baby Girl Flying

Summer is in full swing, and we couldn’t be happier about that fact. We’re kicking off July with a two-week trip to see family and attend some business meetings, which means we’ll be MIA for the next two weeks. We’ll be sticking to our tried and true budget-savvy travel tips while we’re gone. My brother will be house- and cat-sitting, and our cat will be sleeping in all the forbidden areas, like our couch, bed, and Baby Girl’s room.

We may be slow on commenting while we’re gone. If you want to ensure yours gets a reply, you’ll need to make sure you say something really rude or inflammatory.  But not racist or stalkerish, because then we’ll just delete it. Actually, forget everything I just said and just leave normal comments. And I swear we’ll read every single one and try to respond to as many as we can.

Also, today is our first flight with Baby Girl! We’re crossing our fingers and toes that all goes well. Every time I imagine changing a diaper in the airplane bathroom, I have a minor panic attack. Oh, and then there’s the part where our girl is expected to sit still for five hours. No big deal. Why can’t they have a little play area in the back? Perhaps a mini swimming pool? Everyone I’ve talked to about first-flight-with-a-baby butterflies has said, “Just have really low expectations, and you’ll be fine!” And so I’m picturing Johnny, Baby Girl, and myself covered in spit up and poop by day’s end. Wish us luck!

Enjoy time with your family! Do let us know if you find the secret to traveling well with a baby! We have a 4 hour flight coming up and I have been reading all the blog posts out there on traveling with infant/toddlers. So far I’ve learned we apparently need 10 arms I carry everything and occupy her as well as buy new toys….

Our baby (just turned one in June) has been on 8 flights already and his first one was during month 4. We found that sitting in the back of the plane (second to last row) was best for us since it is a little louder back there from the engines (it also acts as a bit of “white noise” to help with sleeping) and if you need to pace the galley back there is a nice place to do it. We made sure we had a couple bottles ready for take/landing and a pacifier as well. We probably just got lucky, but our little guy is a pro.

In general people don’t want to hear a screaming baby, but they tend to cut the parent’s some slack if it looks like the parent is doing all they can to try to soothe the little one. It is the parents who sit there and do nothing that drive frequent travelers nutty.

This. Brian’s advice is great. Our little one had a few cranky moments, but she was mostly great. “Wheels on the Bus” and “If You’re Happy and You Know It” work magic for our little girl, so those in the last three rows were treated to some sweet serenades by yours truly… like 30 times.

    Have a great vacation!

If you want a log of where you have flown with baby girl google “flight memory.” We have been using that to track our little guy’s flight history and it is amazing how far he has flown in a year!

i was petrified the first time i flew with my son, but he was awesome 🙂
sending positive thoughts and good vibes your way. and even if it goes a little south, no worries, most of the people on the plane have been there in one form or another and just happy that its not them 🙂

was that inflammatory enough for you ? haha
    good luck and have fun!

I hope your trip is great and comprised more of vacation time than business time. Hopefully the time in the plane won’t be too bad.
