General Baby Thoughts

We have entered the climbing stage of toddlerdom. Sally spends half an hour climbing up on the couch, and then down from the couch. Up on the couch, then down. Up, down. UP… you get the idea. This has resulted in her falling off the couch several times, which leads to crying and then climbing back onto the couch. When she’s not risking her life by walking around on our bed or trying to climb out of the grocery cart, she’s a very fun little girl who says “Yah” and “No no no no” dozens of times each day.

And, for you future parents out there, I’m gonna tell it to you straight. Tantrums have started… at least for our little angel. Stiffening her whole body, trying to force out a cry, and throwing herself onto the ground are a few of Sally’s signature moves. And then she screams and flails about to her heart’s content. Johnny and I are trying our best not to yell and fling ourselves about in those moments, too. But when she’s not throwing tantrums, Sally’s a pretty swell kid, and we’re as obsessed as ever.

Financial Baby Thoughts

Financially, this is a good age. Sally’s too young to know what the Easter Bunny is, for instance, so he won’t be visiting her this year. Are we heartless? And she’s too active to really care about toys, so we haven’t bought her any of those recently. In lieu of an Easter basket, I bought Sally two books, which cost $10, since she is a bit of a bookworm these days (including actually eating through the books). As far as clothes go, we haven’t bought any clothes in months. She grew so fast the first year, but then it slowed down big time. But everything’s starting to look a tad short, so soon I’ll be buying her some summer clothes in the next size up. I did recently splurge on these red Salt Water sandals, but the cute overload all summer long will make them worth every cent spent, which was $25. I thought I’d be buying an Easter dress for her, but my mom did the honors, so our only other expenses for the month were about $40 on diapers and wipes. So the grand total for the last 30 days of Sallyhood? $75

And now, some pictures of our pride and joy:

15 Months 1

15 Months 2

15 Months 3

For the been-there-done-that crowd, does this sound pretty typical? How do we relate and differ? Does Sally’s love of digging through our trash mean she’s gonna be the ultimate thrifter?

The Easter bunny skipped our house when M was under age 1. He came last year and brought books, a swimsuit & a toothbrush for the little guy. All necessities. He is coming to visit this year again and will bring some necessities (shoes) & treats (Thomas DVD & Despicable Me 2) but we have now also ventured out and my little 2.5 year old loves him some chocolate so I couldn’t resist getting him a few small treats to throw in there. No giant chocolate bunnies in this house though. To risky for the dog that doesn’t leave anything alone…

Sounds like you guys had a great Easter in store for your little ones! I’m excited for when Sally understands the fun holidays! As it is, it’s nice to have an excuse to buy necessities :).

I actually think having the Easter Bunny not visit her is a great idea considering millions (exaggerating?) of kids end up with fears of that rabbit because JUST GOOGLE what it usually looks like. SCARY. It’s perhaps, maybe, totally possible that I was one of said children at one time in my life…..

Ha. I think you were mighty justified in being terrified of the Easter bunny. Who conjured up that alarming looking creature? I’ve yet to see a life-size Easter bunny that has the cute factor going on.

You would be shocked at how quickly her tantrum will stop if you throw one of your own! I have done this….when my daughter would start flopping around screaming and crying (at home) I would just throw myself down and imitate her! She would stop…look at me dumbfounded, and then start cracking up! At that age it will just chill her out. Now my daughter is six and she gets mad at me and stomps up the stairs and slams her bedroom door….

HA! I love that idea. I would probably thoroughly enjoy myself while throwing the tantrum, too. I will definitely be giving it a try…. at least until she gets old enough to slam her own bedroom door :).

We will do a small Easter basket this year (I got our son a harmonica and some goldfish crackers and a little bit of Easter candy) but we did not last year. And I am not telling him about the Easter bunny- I was terrified of the Easter bunny when I was a kid! The idea of a giant rabbit hopping around was just too much. My dad finally had to share the truth with me. Easter is really about church for us, but I am excited that he is old enough this year to hunt for eggs and stuff.

In my extremely limited experience, the earlier the tantrums start, the sooner they stop throwing them!

I love the idea of a harmonica for your son. What a perfect first instrument! I’ve never really thought about how terrifying the Easter bunny probably would be, but I’ve heard several moms lately say how freaked out their kids are about him (it??). I really like your choice to embrace everything else and let the whole Easter bunny thing slide!

And you made my day with your last comment about tantrums!! Fingers crossed Sally follows that route… my little baby has turned into the Hulk!

My second baby is just about 2 weeks younger than Sally and your spending has seemed pretty identical to ours! (Thank goodness for grandparents and their love of buying my children clothes and toys!) Our almost 15 month old is going to be way expensive this next month since he’s outgrowing his infant carseat and we’ll have to buy a big boy carseat for him in the next few weeks- and those things are pricey! She’s a cute kid though! Keep up the good work!

    • Reply Joanna April 28, 2014 at 1:11 am

Good to hear, Courtney! I always wonder how our baby spending compares to other people with babes.

We had to buy a new carseat recently, and it was a big chunk of money. Good news is she seems to be happier in the car (!), and we keep telling ourselves that it’s just a one time purchase that our future children will use, too.

Such a fun age! Tantrums just started around here at almost 2. I think ours are more related to a sibling that could be arriving any day now. I agree it’s a great age financially too! This past month we just bought diapers $38. We are trying to potty train but it’s hit or miss. I’m thinking she is experiencing too many changes at once- new house, big girl room and a soon to be new baby. The diapers were a stock up though so should last into all of May too I think. I also bought her some park clothes and shoes for summer $27. She got a bubble mower for outside and kids broom $13 because she likes to “sweep” the house. Also her monthly prune pouches $24. So not too bad for us but we haven’t really bought anything for baby #2…so I have a feeling this next month will be expensive! As for Easter basket we got 6 large plastic eggs that Annie’s bunnies fruit snacks are going in and 2 books for a total of about $10.

    • Reply Joanna April 28, 2014 at 1:13 am

Sally likes sweeping, too! I give her the Swiffer, and she’s entertained for at least 15 minutes. I’ve gotta know more about the prune pouches you speak of! Where do you get them? I specifically looked for them at the grocery store after reading your comment.

Also, so excited for you, Halsy!! I hope the arrival of your new little one goes smoothly!

We have 3 girls (14, 11, 6). I honestly don’t know how we did it. A complete blur. We both worked full time fast paced jobs. Battled kids being sick and daycare. I somehow managed to run 6 marathons in the middle of it.

Enjoy the time as much as possible. It goes fast. Your brain has a good way of remembering the good parts and blotting out all the others. Selective amnesia I guess.

    • Reply Joanna April 28, 2014 at 1:16 am

I always hear that from people whose kids are growing up — that it goes by fast, and you only remember the good parts. In those first few months of parenthood, I didn’t believe it, but I’m starting to see it’s true. Those newborn days seem so blissful now, even though I know they were really hard!

And kids or not, I don’t think I could ever run even one marathon. Wow!!

Sally is such a cutie! Sounds like it’s not breaking the bank monthly to have a child which is nice to know for the future.
The “funny” thing is: my baby cost more than your baby this month. My baby has fur and four legs and meows, and had some vet issues this month, and now needs to be on prescription diet food to ward off UTIs-forever! A vet visit, urine analysis, eight pounds of dry food, and four cans of wet food cost about $150-unexpected! But isn’t it nice that I have a good handle on my money and budget and took it all in stride? Her food will be much more pricey, but it’s worth it for her health. I’m just happy I can afford it. Yay for saving & budgeting!

      Thanks, Melanie!

Sorry to hear about your little kitty cat (I think they’re kitties no matter their age :)). But I’m glad you and the doc got it figured out. And even awesome-er that you’ve got such a great handle on your finances. Your little fur baby is in very good hands :).

I think it’s a good idea to not start the Easter Bunny too soon. My cousin’s daughter is also scared of the Easter Bunny and posted signs this year at the base of their staircase saying, “No Easter Bunnies Upstairs Please.” I guess she’ll eventually get over the fear! 🙂

    • Reply Joanna April 28, 2014 at 1:20 am

Oh, how cute! Poor thing! I keep hearing about how terrified young kids are of the Easter bunny. It makes sense! I think we’ll definitely hold off on that tradition for Sally, at least until she’s old enough not to take it too literally!

OMGoodness, your daughter is just the cutest! Are you and Johnny open to Time out for Sally? My two year old nephew HAS to have his “me” time with either my brother or sister-in-law. Which is usually the reason why he throws the tantrums. Never would’ve imagined kids needing space just like adults 🙂

    • Reply Joanna May 9, 2014 at 10:56 am

We’re definitely open to time out. I’m not sure if Sally would understand the concept quite yet, but as soon as she does, we’ll definitely be giving it a try! Anything to stop the tantrums!!

I just stumbled upon your website and I LOOOVE it! I like the idea of tracking the expenses of your children. I think this will help us in staying on budget and knowing where the money goes!
