Keeping a Budget

Persie Moving

We’re drowning in boxes up in here! Unpacking with two little kiddos is slow going. It seems that one is always either hungry, screaming, or throwing up on something. Well, Winnie just spits up a ton, and poor Sally got a stomach bug. Luckily, as you can see above, Persie’s been a huge help. We’re also in full-blown purchasing mode, buying a washer and dryer on Monday and a car on Tuesday. NBD. We’re actually feeling very relieved to have those purchases behind us so we can start our new budget!

Speaking of budgeting, right before we left New York, we made a short video with Forbes about our favorite tips and tricks for starting and sticking to a budget. You can watch it below, if you’d like. Our Internet selves and our real selves are about to collide, and you can never unsee it. Just remember that before you press Play. Enjoy!

Congrats on the Forbes feature! Great tips on budgeting. I admire that you talk about your budget since that was once so taboo. Sounds like it’s helping a lot of people be motivated and inspired to make changes.

Good luck getting settled. I can only imagine how crazy that must be with two little ones!

Good luck with the unpacking, it looks like Persie will be a huge help! 🙂 I’ve been a reader for a long time and have never commented but I was intrigued to read that you will be buying a car this week! Will you keep us posted? My husband and I have been saving diligently and are ready to purchase a $5-8,000 vehicle but I am so overwhelmed and afraid that I will end up with a lemon!

I have heard some people say they are afraid of Craigslist or private sellers on AutoTrader. If you have cash, there are more deals to be had there than at the dealerships! Just do the research, be prepared, have someone knowledgeable check out the car, and if it doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and walk away! Oh, and take care of the title transfer at the DMV.

Thanks for the awesome advice! That was just the motivation I needed to head over to Craigslist with my mechanic’s number on speed dial! I just checked out your blog and I will be following! 🙂

Wow! Great video guys! Of course you and my wife and I are all on the same page when it comes to budgeting and saving (although I’ve never taken a suitcase up to Harlem to go Costco shopping)! 🙂
Just know that all this does eventually lead one day to financial independence, as we can attest to.

Great video! Also, I can completely understand the desire to have the spending out of the way so that you can start again with a clean slate. I would always rather get the pain of spending out of the way as soon as possible!

Yay! It’s so much fun to see you on YouTube. I would love to see you start a channel. Best of luck with your move and the new home. Thanks for sharing your adventures 🙂

Congrats on the video! Good luck with the unpacking 🙂 My boyfriend moved in just before Christmas and I finally feel like we’re mostly done unpacking / selling old furniture / buying new furniture. It only took us about 8 months!

Glad to hear that the move is going well!! Loved watching the video since it shows your personalities and what a great time you make.

You both looked great and rocked it. I usually dislike watching videos (would rather read articles), but loved this one. Great job 🙂

That video would be super helpful to anyone just starting out. When you mentioned “Miscellaneous” it reminded me of our own Miscellanous/where the heck does this go budget. I continue to work on finding a balance between categorizing things as miscellaneous, and seeing if there are several regular purchases in there. Then it may be time for a new category.

Oh, Persie, silly kitty, you can’t use that hammer! You don’t have thumbs!

I know how challenging my two kids are on a daily basis so I can only imagine unpacking with them. My wife and I have been trying to get laser focused on our budget lately, so thanks for the great tips. Also congrats on the work with Forbes, that’s fantastic!

Great video! I am nosy: did you have to break your lease? If so, can you post about it? That’s a hot topic amongst New Yorkers!

Love the video! Best of luck unpacking. It is the literal worst.

Great video! I like the idea of focusing on what’s motivating you during budgeting because it will evolve and change with time. I’m updating my 3 yr plans now…

New fan of the site here, keep up the great work!

Great video! I guess that is the first time I saw you guys on video rather than writing or pictures. Nice to “meet” you! 🙂
